Monday (and Completed Projects needing evaluations)

  12/15/18 09:31, by John

A (chronological by posting) list of projects needing evaluation:

Alyssandra

Juniper

Caitlin

(Alyssandra also has posted a survey here)

Monday

PROJECT PRESENTATION(s): If there is leadership (a person or a protocol for ordering project presentation(s) in advance and a means of efficiently keeping presenters prepared in advance so as to be on task of keeping their presentations succinctly under two minutes) then presentations can have the first segment of class time.

BASIC: Statistics in Advertising

PREPARATION: Find an advertisement (graphic or text; online or print) that uses any "statistic" -- post a link to the image/site if the online. Feel free to link more than one as you find these. Also look to the fine print for disclaimer statistics.

SECTION ONE: Excel Exercise.

PREPARATION: Attached is an EXCEL sheet containing a data and an exercise worksheet. Continue practicing using the "offset" and "Match" functions to organize data. If somebody could transfer the EXCEL sheet to Google Sheets I would appreciate this -- for some reason GS is not opening on my new (low end) computer.

SECTION TWO: Last chance to come up with a strategy for using correlated data from the NHL to come up with a rank list of the league from best to first.

PREPARATION Comment you interest and post what categories (or combination of categories) you want to use to create your ranking and what weighting of each category  -- I'll  create a rank list from your selections and weightings.

We'll see whose rankings are most accurate at predicting wins for the next month.

SECTION THREE: Platonic solids.

PREPARATION: Dylan is way ahead here -- she has the tetrahedron, cube, and octahedron (as I remember) -- we need the icosahedron (I'll work on this tomorrow) and dodecahedron.

Project Ideas (comment interest for the future)

1. Books

a. "Wisdom of the Crowds" -- I made a copy

b. "Freakonomics" -- Statistical explanation of social phenomena -- I made a copy

c. "Bringing Down the House" -- MIT students count cards and count cash they win from Vegas casinios -- I'll make a copy

2. Predictions

  a. Using Google Trends or Correlate to predict stock prices.

b. Using past performance of stock prices to predict future success.

c. Predicting NFL Super Bowl Champion from regular season data

d. Using online surveys to predict events

e. Using online "crowd wisdom" sites to predict ....

3. Polling

a. Creating biased/manipulative poll results from interpreted data

b. Study of polling methodology differences

I will be attending section one (excel practice) and section three (platonic solids) in addition to the basic section. For preparation, I will work on the excel practice sheet tomorrow and post any questions if I have them. I will also see if I can make a dodecahedron.

I attached an image of an advertisement that I found that uses stats.

I just realized that the copy cuts off some of John’s instructions, so look back at the excel version for that.

I will be in the basic section and section 1 tomorrow. I have been having some second thoughts about some of the projects I set for myself so I might change them, thanks for posting those suggestions John.

Thanks John! I will be in the basic section of class, as well as section two. The rest of the time, I will be working on various projects. Here is a couple advertisements I found

http://www.businessofapps.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Snapchat-Study-1.png

This one is good, because it will get all the high school students on snapchat, because if the older people are using it, then the younger ones will as well (in some cases)

This one is a classic. I have also seen people ask why everyone gets this toothpaste since dentists make money off of you having bad teeth…

I successfully made a dodecahedron! I can nearly close my hand around the whole thing (it is mini).

I had no problem just copying and pasting the excel practice sheet into a google docs. I would attach it for other people to use but I am not sure how to make it accessible…

I will be attending the Basic section of class tomorrow.

For the time I am not in class I will be compiling data from Hannah’s, Emery’s and my dice rolls on Monopoly.

I went quite a few video ads, I found that ads for Medcine usually had some sort of statistics used in them.

Here is an ad from the National Institute of Drug Abuse

I’m coming to Basic and Section 3.

Also, John do you have the “Freakonomics” book? That’d be great if I could read that as a project or two.
